My Story

Passion for Sport and Achievement

Many people have influenced my life and, in particular, my decision to pursue a career in fitness. It started at the age of eight in a Seattle area Track & Field (Athletics) program. My first coach was a man named Barry Savage, whose unforgettable intensity and passion for life was truly inspirational.

The first day of practice he told us that we could count on him being there every day. He would never miss a day he said, “Because I never get sick.” He didn’t believe in getting sick and, during the time that I knew him, he never was. It was an early lesson on how thoughts directly affect our body’s condition.

As a fitness professional for many years, I have continued to learn from a great number of teachers and coaches. At every level, primary school through college, these dedicated professionals have influenced my approach not only to health and wellness but also to life. My passion and drive, due in large part to my mentors, has led me to compete in a wide variety of sports, over 20 at last count. Some of my favorites include: basketball, football, snow skiing, water skiing, rowing, power lifting, triathlons, tennis and squash. I have encountered many coaches over the years and I learned something from each and every one of them.

One coach in particular, Richard Yonk, made a strong impact in my life. In addition to being my offensive line coach in high school football, he was also the teacher of my Weight Training and Conditioning class. It was during this time that I learned the power of goal setting and visualization.

You see, there were these powerful, motivating records posted in the locker room—records for everything from 40 yard dash time to bench press and bar dips. It wasn’t long before I had my sights set on a few of them and having done so began working out like never before.
